What
do you think about National Examination or “UAN”? Some students feel afraid they cannot pass
and continue their study, while the rest feel ready to face the national
examination. But, do you know what the definition of national examination is?
The national examination is a test to determine whether students can pass and
continue to higher education. But national examination has some regulations
which make some students feel unhappy. Do you know what makes some students
feel afraid and unhappy with a national examination? I believe there are some
drawbacks of the national examination which need to be taken in to
consideration by the government.
First,
the national examination does not appreciate the process of studying. One
student cannot pass from his/her school only because he/she does not pass in a
national examination. The National Examination is only score oriented. Even
though the student has a good achievement and always gets a top rank. For
example, I have a friend who does not pass from Senior high School although she
always gets top rank in her class. She has to take a “C package” informal
education which is the same as taking a course and only get a course
certificate. In addition, she cannot enter a state-owned university and become
government employee later on. So, she had studied for 3 years for nothing when
she did not pass, she could only get a C package certificate. Only because of
that, her plan turned upside down, not to mention the time wasted. I think it is not fair especially for the
clever students. Government should also provide the best policy so that some
students are motivated to study hard and reach their goals.
Second,
the national examination makes some student become dishonest. The national
examination makes some students get standard scores so that some students cheat
to pass in the national examination. For example, some students buy answer keys
so that they can pass in the national examination. In some cases, teachers also
share answer keys. Some teachers also do the test and then they share answer
keys via short messages or SMS. We know that not only students but also
teachers will do anything so that all students can pass in a national
examination. In other case, some students who do not have enough money will depend
on other students who are clever in this class to give answer keys. Other
example, Mrs .Siami , mother of Al , 6th grade student of SDN Gadel
II Surabaya East Java with her family has to leave her house after revealing
cheating case in school which happened in UASBN(School Final Examination Equal of National Quality). She
has to move because some villagers think that she has given a bad name for the
school even though she told the truth. It tells us that cheating becomes tradition and a “good value”. It also
tells us that The National Examination is not the best solution to measure
success of educational system in Indonesia. The National Examination makes
young generations become dishonest and produce many unaccountable leaders.
Third,
the national examination makes some students feel stressful and frustrated.
Some students feel afraid cannot pass and continue to higher education. If they
don’t pass in a national examination, they have to take “C package”. It means
they get certificate from informal education like courses. In consequence, they
cannot enter government university and government employee. In addition, they
also have to study a lot of lessons. They have to repeat some lessons from
first until third grade. It absolutely makes them frustrated because they also
have to think about their higher education.
Lastly,
there are some drawbacks of national examination which need to be taken into
consideration by the government such as making some students become dishonest,
stressful, and frustrated. I have recommendations to erase National Examination
or If Government doesn’t erase National Examination, They can change percentage
of final score. If now 60% for UAN score and 40% for School score, They can
reverse percentage of final score. So, definitely The National Examination is
not the best solution to increase a quality of educational system in Indonesia.
The National Examination only concerns about scores and also makes another
social problem in society.
